Subject: Re: IDS Option

A couple of years ago I checked into these same questions because I travel to Europe from time to time and my father is retired from GM. Keep in mind that even with the IDS program you are purchasing the car locally; the order MUST be processed by a North American Saab dealer, even though you don't initially take possession of the car there. This dealer will be the location where you pick up the car when it is delivered in the US. When I checked, it was more beneficial to use the employee discount than the IDS because the discount amount was higher and you don't have to wait for the car to be manufactured. You just pick up the one you want from the dealer. You might (correctly) infer from this that you can't use both the employee discount and the IDS discount on the same car. The GM employee discount for Saab's works differently than for other GM products; they publish a list with the employee purchase price for each model and trim level. This list (and the discount amount) can change from year to year, so you should check with your dealer to see which gets you the better price. The dealer will happily tell you what the IDS price and delivery time estimate will be, but you may need to provide your wife's social security number to get information on the employee pricing. You can also get employee pricing information from the Saab customer service 800 number. Saab sometimes has a promotion that offers flights to Europe for two as part of the IDS program. This may change the value of that option to you. All fees, including customs, insurance and license plates while you drive the car in Europe is included in the IDS pricing. There can be an additional charge of up to $150 depending on which return point you drop off the car after you are done using it in Europe and if you drive the car in Europe for more than 6 months (or is it 12 months?) there is an additional charge for insurance. The www.saabusa.com website has an IDS section that explains some of this and provides more details on which return points are available and what the charges are. This should get you right to the IDS info: http://www.saabusa.com/home/US/en/ids/index.html I hope this helps.
