Subject: 9000 auto tranny questions

Dear fellow Saabers, I am writing this message for a friend of mine who owns a modelyear 1991 Saab 9000 2.3t griffin with an automatic transmission. The car has 220.000 kms on the odometer. Since a couple of days the auto tranny is playing weird. I will try and describe the sympthoms as accurate as possible: When shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, the car shivers, and it takes an unusually long time to shift. The shivering seems to come from the engine compartment, and lasts as long as the car accelerates. As soon as the speed of the car becomes constant the shivering stops, but while driving at a constant speed of 30-40 km/h (=approx. 20-30 mph) the engine revs up between 1200 and 2000 rpm. The shivering seems to occur especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd, but also when shifting from 2-3 and 3-4. Also sometimes the gearlever cannot be put into reverse gear. I have checked the tranny fluid, but it seems ok to me. The level is ok and the fluid is transparent, i.e. not brown. Is this a problem that can be fixed by an DIY-mechanic, or do I have to get a specialized company (i.e. dealer) to change/replace it? Furthermore, is it possible to drive the car for 250 kms to go to the dealer or will it definitely leave me standing along the side of the road? TIA for answering!
