This may sound like a simple solution- Check the battery terminals for tightness. I had a similar problem on a Honda and I've seen it happen on other machines. If one is loose, you'll get contact, everything will look ok until you try pulling a bunch of amps(like starting). When you do, it'll basically die. It was intermittant on mine and sometimes the car would just up and die while running. My machine would give that clicking sound when starting like theres not enough juice. I wiggled the battery terminal to where it was a bit tighter and voila! Once I tightened up the cable, everything was fine.
