Subject: Re: Engine / Tranny Replacements for 1988 8 valve 900

Well, The engine may very well have had it. The leak from the front is probably a oil pump o-ring/front seal. Given the situation, I would get a used engine/transmission from a junked car which has been wrecked and does not have too many miles on it. If you are near Columbus, OH, there is a decent '89 900 base with engine and transmission IIRC it has 120ish kmi on it. I would put in the junkyard motor and run it a while to see what I had. You can mix and match the FI/intake parts to use the CIS FI system of the 8v on the 16V engine. The transmission poor shifting may be helped by a lube change and possibly a new motor mount or 2. If the motor is sitting low in front due to a bad motor mount, it will shift harder. The older 8v cars are not known (esp NA ones) for trashing transmissions. The major failure mode of these is to have a whine indicative of a failing pinion bearing. This leads to 'popping out of gear' and then trashed gears. It is up to you. To do a complete rebuild with new parts to build a 'spec' engine may be out of your price range. (full gasket kit, bearings, pistons, rings, etc). I do not know who you could get a 'crate motor' from, but Saab may be pricey. See what a dealer would charge. Also call Ericsson and see if they know where you may get one. They do transmissions only (AFAIK), bur may know of someone. Look on saabnet.com and see if there may be a good motor for sale. What part of the country are you in?
