The fact that it starts ok should mean that the start-valve is doing it's initial job of giving a few seconds of extra fuel. I've got a very similar problem with my 84 900i which I have traced to the auxillary air valve not resetting itself to be fully open when the engine is cold. Purely as a test I tried bypassing the valve by connecting the two hoses together and the car started and ran perfectly. I'm now in the process of trying to track down a replacement aux-air valve.
