Thank you all for your replies.
To sum up:
My friend's claim of 33 mpg is an unlikely average, but (perhaps) a valid
segment reading.
Most owners report mpg from the mid-20's (low end) to high-20's (and slightly
above for exclusively highway driving).
So 24 - 29 appears to be an accurate range, with 24-26 for stop/go traffic and
27-29 for highway cruising.
