Subject: Re: Turbo Cooling

Use a good quality motor oil change it on regular schedule, poor oil will coke or cook off around the turbo bearing. Don't shut down before letting turbo spin down and cool, turbo impeller is suspended on film of oil in bearing. Works great with engine oil pressure, wears out bearing with out oil between turbo impeller and bearing. Same on starting wait for engine to build oil pressure before revving to here that cool whistling sound of turbo. Older 900s are oil cooled, water cooling is an additional option with turbo replacement and kit. Newer Saab 900s turbos are oil + water cooled. I suppose you could say you get some cooling from air under the hood around the turbo but not much, they really depend on engine oil to carry heat away and lube the bearing along with the engine cooling sys on newer turbo.
