Subject: '86 900 SPG. Repair Leather Seats?

Hello, I have an '86 900 SPG. The seats (Edwardian Grey) are showing a bit of wear (brown showing through the grey), but the main problem is a tear in the upper part of the driver's side. It's about 2-3 inches and getting worse. I live in central Iowa and there is not a Saab dealer in town. There is a Saab specialist in my old home town, where I visit occasionally. I contacted them, but they cannot get replacement seats...and when they could, the cost was $400-500 per component (i.e., base, back, headrest). They are recommending customers go to a local shop when you can get a vinyl replacement that is a "very good match". I can't imagine putting a vinyl seat (or pair if I had the passenger side down also to match) in my lovely SPG. It's running great, has only 66,000 miles; so I plan to keep this another 15 years (hopefully). My other option is to have a local repair shop "patch" the leather. He did this for a small hole in the back seat (on the top rim) and it looks nice, but that area is not going to go through the same type of stress that the driver seat area will encounter. I don't know that a patch would hold up there. Any suggestions? Has anyone else had a similar problem? thanks in advance Kathy
