Head gasket, fan not operating (check fan/relay/temp sender) are all causes for overheating. Running the car for any period with a hot engine will damage the head and gasket (if the head gasket hasn't already gone). The fan should operate when the needle is at 3/4 or so (depending on sender) and stay on until needle is back down to 1/2. You should be able to leave the car idling on a hot day for hours, observing this behaviour. If the fan is operating correctly but not dropping the needle I would suspect a head gasket, which could also be the cause of your subsequent leak (too much pressure in the system). A pressure test or the liquid that is put in the header tank to sense fuel/exhaust gas presence can confirm a head gasket is blown.
