To convert to R134A, you need to change the receiver drier, the oil in the compressor need to be evacuated and replaced with a different type, and some people say that you need to change every seal in the system as well! If your man just refills the system with R134A and doesn't change the compressor oil, there's a good chance your compressor will seize shortly afterwards. For a good explanation look at this US site: http://www.autofrost.com/ An alternative is to find someone who can supply / fit one of the so-called 'drop-in' gases. I think they're called RS24 or R-406A. I'm looking to get this done on mine, but I haven't yet found anyone who supplies these. They seem to be common knowledge in the States though. By the way, if you decide to convert to R134A, bear in mind that it's nowhere near as good a refrigerant as R12. You WILL notice a considerable reduction in cooling performance. This is why cars fitted with R134A have larger condensors from new. If you find someone who can do it, please let everyone on the 'board know? Thanks Pete.
