Subject: overheating problem

I have had a 1991 Saab 900 for over a year now and can't seem to fix an overheating problem. My mechanic is a saab specialist but it seems he can't diagnos the problem correctly. We've replaced the thermostat twice (with the special saab one) and have fixed a leak (that developed after the problem had started. I suspect the radiator but our mechanic keeps on telling me the radiator is fine. When driving in hot weather the temp can go as high as the red line but never actually enters it. The car is usualy fine when driving on highway (may go up to the 3/4 mark though). Before I send the car to the dealership does anyone have any ideas about what the problem might be? Also, how bad is it to drive my Saab with an over heating problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks. tenpercenter54nopsamail.com
