Have similar problem on my "87 convert. (See previous posting this week as '87 AC problems). Yesterday the whole thing froze up and almost melted the belt before I could pull over. Just as I open the hood the belt broke to a haze of rubber smoke. Even after this the car ran hot with the right hand fan never going on. Doesn't go on after I shut off the engine like it used to. Kept the AC switch on on to keep the left side fan running and that helped. Looks like more $$$ into this beast. Had been quoted about $330 just to convert it to the new freon system. But that was when we thought it was just low on freon.
