Subject: High idle speed on 88 900i

My recently acquired 900i 16v seems to idle too quickly. The manual says 850 but my car judging by the tacho is idling at around 1000 to 1200 . The idle speed is erratic and it seems to fluctuate in this speed range. Can the idle speed be adjusted (Australian car) and if so how? What may be causing the high and somewhat erratic idle? I have adjusted the idle stop screw but it was at it's limit and has made no difference. ALso the Check Engine light is back on -also erratically. I have checked and cleaned all available electrical contacts ie. Oxygen sensor, MAF connector. Temp sensor, etc, What is the most common cause of the Check ENgine light coming on? ANy ideas very welcome John Sydney 88 900i 16v 183,000 km
