Subject: '87 AC problems

The air conditioner on my '87 900T convert has been putting out very little cold air recently. At higher speeds it all I got was hot air. I asked my Saab mechanic to check it out. It's still an R-12 system and he indicated that it was low on gas but did not have any R-12. I had a couple of R-12 14 oz can in the garage left over form years ago so I figured I'd add some. Before I got the chance, the AC belt broke. I replaced it and while adding the freon, I noticed that the AC compressor clutch was slipping and making a lot of noise. It did take in the full can of freon, but now the AC clutch is rattling and slipping. As the engine accelerates the clutch just slips. At idle, when it will engage, on and off, it is blowing colder so I think I may have two problems and only solved one. Can the AC clutch system be replaced independent of the compressor? If so, is it a relatively straightforward job or does it take special tools?
