If it is a hatchback, fold the rear seat down and put the bike in the back. That way you won't get flamed for using a rear mounted rack that has been known to impale pedestrians. Bikes stored inside the car are harder to steal or vandalize. The top mount rack systems can be very expensive, especially if you don't have the roof racks already.
