Had my 87 900s converted in '97 so my memory is a little hazy but I have my repair order. My Saab techs said they did a bit of research to find the best retrofit kit. I have an appointment this Fri so will ask them if I think about it. If you send me your email address I'll pass on what I find out. > Can this be done by someone understanding the basic mechanics? Question goes mostly for the I would think it is basic air conditioning technology once you get the right mix of parts and the right process for converting. > parts? Do you need to change the compressor (got answers both ways, just > checking more) and do you need to change any other parts i.e. dryer? Change compressor -No. They changed my dryer and as I recall they said it was necessary. Other parts maybe were those involved with an overhaul of an AC system. > Changeover involves changing appropriate valves and connectors - all of > which should be available in a kit: any advice on where to look for the > affordable ones? So any additional info or web-pages describing this A very important part of the process, as I recall it was the evacuation of the system. They had it on some kind of vacumn machine for well over an hour (as I live over 40 miles away from my techs I was there the whole time.) > adventure would be appreciated... I avoid local dealership as they have > tried to pull a fast one or two on this car before... I would never go to a dealer for anything but parts but go to one of 2 or 3 independent Saab specialists in the area Here's a list of parts - I'm sure some would be ordinary replacements, some are necessary by the conversion. BTW, R-12 was still available in '97 and my system needed a full charge which would have been well over $90. The R-134 was $18. 4 - Schreader valves 1 - A/C expansion valve 10-A/C O-rings 1 - A/C receiver/dryer 1 - A/C retrofit kit 1 - A/C leak detector oil. (the propane torch test will not work with r-134 so they add a substance that phosphoresces(sp) under black light. 3.5 hours of labor Hope this sparse info will help. Ron Friesen Loveland, CO
