FYI, I bought a 1984 900 S hatchback two years ago with 103K mi. on it, and I have had to replace a lot of the normal wear-and-tear items. This includes clutch, brakes all around (rotors, calipers, etc.), all four ball joints, rear shocks and springs, and some exhaust. I still need one inner tie rod (mine's worn) and maybe a steering rack and O2 sensor. This sounds like a lot, but it's a 17-year-old car and these things wear out. I only paid $850 for the car, so the additional $2800 to fix all this doesn't seem TOO bad. I figure now I've done all the big ticket items so I'm good for a few years (I hope). These are obvious things to look at when you're buying an old car. One of the more mechanically inclined people here can probably tell you more about what to look for in the engine. IMO, the mid-80s hatchbacks are the best-looking Saabs, and mine's a great car even at 17 years old. I can't think of a vehicle on the road that I'd rather own (except a mid-80s 900 Turbo hatchback! ;-)). -jw
