The light suddenly came on, a few weeks after I bought the car, for no apparent reason (and the car still was running fine). Trip No. 1 to the dealer found no trouble codes in the computer. Dealer suggested that I hadn't tightened up the gas cap properly, and there IS a warning on the gas cap that if it's loose, the check engine light may come on. Dealer reset the system. Light stayed out for about a week, then came on again. I thought I'd have the gas cap checked to see if it was not tight enough. Took the car to an emissions-testing station. They took the cap off and tested it, finding it OK. Gas cap off the car for about 15 minutes. Put it back on, and drove off. Miraculously, the check engine light was OFF. However, it came back on after about 10 minutes. Trip No. 2 to the dealer. I suggested that the oxygen sensor might need to be replaced (although the mileage, about 65,000 seemed too low for that). They changed the oxygen sensor on a trial basis. Everything OK for a few days, but then the check engine light came back on. Trip No. 3 to the dealer. This time they fixed it by redoing a wiring harness (and putting the original O2 sensor back in). This was about three months ago, and there has been no recurrence of the problem. (I haven't been able to locate the bill, so that I can be more specific about what they did, but in any case the description of the work was rather vague. It wasn't a particularly expensive repair.)
