It is definitely OK. I do this all the time. With modern shape skiis the lengths are always short enough to fit without moving the front seats up. In fact, it's preferable (for the skiis) to carry them where they won't get road salt and slush sprayed on them. I always have to laugh at the yahoos with the monster size SUVs (Expeditions, Suburbans, etc.) and a ski rack on top. Just another trendy thing to shout out, "Hey everyone, I'm cool! I ski!"
