Greetings, Still a newbie to this newsgroup which BTW I quite enjoy reading. As said before I just acquired a 900 1984. Just did a little roundtrip this week-end of 1800 km and enjoyed it very much. It's a long time since I did some DIY on cars. So I have forgotten some definitions, tricks and so forth. Now that the car is nr its 180K km I want to take the opportunity to have a thourough service and maintenance. Don't know what the previous owners did. So I need some explanations on the one hand to refresh my memory on the other hand as this is my first Saab. So expect some postings on my behalf. But now back to the subject. If I am correct for the motor I should use SAE 10 W 30 or SAE 10 W 40 or also SAE 5 W 30. Can anyone explain me again what this abbreviations and numbers stand for. I know there are some products available that also clean the engine of any residue. What is you expert opinion on the matter of oils. I also would change the oil filter, any recommendations on that. What about gearbox oil? I have following listed SAE 10 W 30 or SAE 10 W 40 or also SAE 5 W 30 but then SAE EP 75, API GL4 or API GL5. Appreciate your input, comments and replies. They should reveal me a little on the engine situation.
