Yup, I'll second that opinion. It should be very easy to get a compatible box. You should be able to bolt on any 5-speed from an 8 valve 99 or 900 from 1981 onwards (i.e. H-type engine). As far as gearboxes from the older B-engines or 16v engines - or possibly the Saab 90's, I'll let the experts in this NG put in their 2 cents' worth to say if they'd work or not. I got my 1983 99 GL gearbox fixed (couldn't get a few gears due to destroyed pinion bearing) here in G–teborg, at an independent who'd worked for 19 years at the Saab gearbox factory here in town. Cost was SEK 3500 back in 1994 (almost too good to be true, but then he runs a "bare bones" workshop). Email me - remove "nospam" in the address - if this could be an alternative for you. If you're in southern Norway, it might be. BTW I don't have any business association with this mechanic, but he's good enough that I don't mind passing his name on to a few.
