When the gauge on my '92 900 indicated "zero", the problem was in the sending unit in the tank. Apparently the stem of the float can fail, or the fine wire inside the sending unit can break. Either results in "empty tank". The sending unit is at the top of the tank, accessed through the trunk floor; and if you're handy, should be fairly easy to check, and then replace if failed. If it is the sending unit, you ARE without fuel indications, and should fill up about every 400 km, (250 miles) or risk running dry!
