Is there any hesitation while this smoke is happening?. Black smoke is usually an indication of unburned fuel. Also this could be an excessive deposits on the cylinders, particularly if the car is driven for short distances. Maybe you need a good fuel system cleaner (two treatments of Chevron's Techron Concentrate). In addition to what Carl is saying, I would check plugs, plug wires and check fuel pump and change air filter (and while at it fuel filter). All these are cheaper than an O2 sensor.
