Subject: Re: Upgrading SAAB Audio

Kyle says... >> I had a pioneer put into my 900S and >> needed an amp to get the sound loud enough (or maybe more speakers) > >Depends, did you keep the stock speakers? Because I'll tell you my >speakers are plenty loud enough with 45 watts peak, that's more then >twice stock:) No, I picked out new ones, I believe they were 45 watts also, Alpine. I'll never forget the ass*ole who sold them to me either, they did nothing but bitch about putting them in the car, then made fun of me while I was listening to different speakers. (I'll spare you all the details) Left my car a mess too, and that was after I gave him a dozen doughnuts. > >My problems with the stock head unit. (this all personal opinion) >Wattage (yes it can be fixed by adding an amp, but it still bothers >me) Why? I had an amp put in and it was awesome. Except, they had to rip the dash apart and put it down under the center console and it threw off lots of heat. >Analog controls (hate them) > I like digital volume controls because then I can easily tell exactly >how I can safely turn my volume up to. I don't need to worry about >blowing anything by accident Yeah, I know what you mean, but it has never been a problem with me. I get sick of digital everything, with analog is just seems to feel like I have more control, power over the electronic. >Equalizer (Not precise enough) > Only allows you to adjust bass and treble, proper midrange setup is >just as important as bass and treble. You bet, and this is where I want analog! I had the best equalizer in my old car, and you are correct about the midrange. It was worth every cent I paid for it. I just loves those slide switches, moving them around to find the best, clearest sound. >No in dash CD player. > I don't own a single tape so the tape deack is useless to me. Not even one?! See, I don't mind because I go to the library and sometimes get books on tape for long road trips. Not just novels either, they have got all sorts of stuff I like to learn about. It helps pass the time, and books on CD are very expensive for libraries - but they are getting there. There are always more tapes available. I still own some too, even ones that I listen to. >AS for >the CD changer, I have far mroe then five CD's and I'd rather just pop >it out of my visor holder then have to stop, open the trunk, and put >in five different CDs. For em it's just more convenient. I couldn't live without my CD changer. I love it, it holds six CD's and I can program it to play one song from one CD, then onto another. I like to mix things up like that, variety. I also like how easy it is to change, and I rarely listen to the whole six cd's in one sitting. When I listen to music, a particular group I am interested in - I need to hear it from all angles. The singing angle, cause I usually sing along in the car. The guitar angle, the bass line angle, the drums, beat, tempo and how it all morphs into a song. So I will change my cds only after I've got it down and have heard the songs from every angle I need to listen. Can you tell I'm serious about my music? > Looks. I like having and aftermarket DIN head unit because it maeks >the care look more unique. I like to try to keep things as is, or special ordered specifically to my taste. If I want my car to look unique, I will do something more cosmetic. >Just like the "control panel" I've wired >into the empty slot above the head unit and below the SID. I've got a >switch wired to turn off my amp I wished I had that, mine was always on. and a toggle switch with three >position, ignition, off, battery. When it's at ignition the headunit >runs like normal. It turns on when you start the car and off when you >turn off the car. At off it's off (wow!:) and at battery it it's on >regardless of the key. Why did you need a switch for that? In my 900 (I now have a 9000) accessory would be like battery, on would be on and off would be off. I do remember some problem with off being off, but I brought it back to them. (without doughnuts this time) > > Plus I hate proprietary setups, so I prefer to have an aftermarket >headunit with standard RCA jacks. This last bit is just persoanl >preference but it does simplify upgrades. Yes, I bet it does make upgrades easier. If I could do it all myself, I could easily lie down hundreds of dollars in what I want for audio equip in my vehicle. > >> >Frankly... maybe it is time to start decoding the controls. (and here >> >comes the famous last words) "How hard can it be?" :) >> >> You would do that?! > >I would if mine had it. But then again, I find that kind of stuff >relaxing. RELAXING?! You must have a very analytical mind. > >> I mean that is lots of trouble to go to for music. >> I think if the wattage is there you just need to do other things to achieve the >> sound you want. >> Is that right? > >Yes, wattage really isn't the msot important thing. But I've found you just can't get a good sound out of say...20 watts. Or maybe it is just me, and how loud I like my music. It's amazing what >proeperly setting up your treble, mid range and bass setting will do. >Contrary to many people's beliefs the best setting is not to have all >at an equal zero setting. DOH! How many people actually think that? I mean all you have to do is listen! > > I've mine set at (digital equalizer in my head unit) Bass -1, Mid >range +2, Treble +3. It's crystal clear at even high setting. Of >course you should experiment to find the perfect balance for your >stereo. Oh, believe me I do all kinds of stuff with it. I change it according to what I'm listening to. I've found the settings aren't across the board for every type, style of music. > > But the above is about using what you have to it's utmost. So a >properly configured 45W system will sound better then a properly >configuered 20W system. I don't mean volume either, if you have both >putting out 10W then the 20W system will be near it's max but the 45W >system will be much clearer since it's not straining so it will be >clearer. That is what I thought. Now, for my 9000 I'm happy enough with the Clarion, I just want new and more speakers. > > Also a 45W amplifier will be just as loud as a 45W headunit, but the >amp will be much clearer. It really is, like it is ~right~ there in your ear. >A head unit has a single chip that serves as >an amplifier. An amp has an entire circuit board doing the same thing >as that oen chip. I haven't heard a chip that can make the cut, but audio equip moves and changes so fast. I don't even bother looking around at it anymore. ~J~
