Engine braking - the deacceleration force applied by the engine to the car when there is no pressure on the accelerator In manual transmission you get the full control of the engine at all speeds - it was in the Saab 96 and 95 in the late 60's and early 70s that one could have free wheel enabled - just like freewheeling on a bicycle (also on the early 99s using the 1750cc engine (from what I remember)) I have used Gear 2 up to 30 mph - it gives one better control of the car without having to apply the brake to keep the speed down. On my manual 900 I use the cruise control to keep to slow speed limits - on the auto I cannot do that as soon as I start going down a slope the car speeds up and I have to brake unless I have selected a lower gear On Sun, 2 Sep 2001 10:51:31, Nutmegger<Menopsamcretroadagain.com> wrote: > Derek Wright says... > > > >The 9-5 Automatic will use more breaking as the car does not have any > >any engine breaking below about 35mph in normal drive gear so to slow > >you have to break - > > What do you mean by engine breaking? > What if it is a manual transmission, doesn't that make a difference? > > >if you are in slow moving traffic it is worth > >while using Gear 2 so that you get engine control at low speeds.
