No offense, but it's clear that you don't know exactly what you're doing, and it would be vastly better if you not be mucking about with the AC in this case. Better, then, to pay someone who is licensed & has the proper equipment, to do it. Besides - if it's low on, or out of freon, it's for a reason, and if you just dump more R-12 in, it'll just leak out. Since they're not making the stuff anymore, it'd be a short-term fix at best. : Would one of you be able to offer any sort of assistance here?
