I have seen cars that burned as much as quart of oil per 50 miles and did not appear to smoke or show signs of oil on the plugs. The compression was good but the oil control rings were bad. On a cold start up there would be some smoking but you would not see it if you were driving, you would have to be behind it. How many miles are on your 9000? Has it had regular and frequent oil changes? It is unusual for Saabs to burn oil until 250k miles or so.
