No, it has two CAN buses. The CAN bus was specially designed for automotive applications. There is a connector below the steering wheel that is used by the Tech-II instrument. It is not a direct connection to the CAN buses, but the MIU (the main instrument unit) can act as a router between the test connector and the CAN buses. Using some form of bus topology is quite common in modern cars. It saves cabling resulting in lower weight, reduced cost, and increased possibility for features. The heated rear seat in the 9-5, as an example, knows about the outside temperature, the windshield wiper knows about the speed of the car, and the rear window heater will tell the engine computer in advance about the increased power demand on the generator.
