Subject: thanks for the advice so far.... 2 questions.

Well we bought the 9000CS 10 days ago, and thanks for all the replies received on the thread "help: about to become a saab owner????" Its a 2.3 eco LPT 1996 with 143km (90 miles) on the clock. It feels special every time we get in it (now I know what you guys are on about!). From it's records, its been well serviced and looked after. Now for my two questions. I brought from an authorised Saab dealer so I expect that things will be put right if something should give up and die in the short term. (please, no comments about saab dealers, these guys have been really good to deal with so far) 1. The air conditioning smells! Not an unpleasant smell but it is continuous and gets stronger as we drive. At first I thought is just the smell from the grooming the car got before we picked it up. I've read a little bit in this group about "maple syrup" smells and this is the same thing I reckon. Its seems to be there if the AC is switched on or not and comes from the panel vents. Is this something I should be concerned about? The dealer says he will ride with me for a bit later this week and advise me if the smell is "normal". 2. From the manual, the eco series low pressure turbos come with a catalytic converter. The manual says "use unleaded only", however unleaded fuel in NZ is only 91 octane. The higher octane 96 petrol over here is leaded. The dealer has said I will get better performance and economy from the leaded 96 rather than the 91 and that it "won't do the car any harm". He also says that the car is clever enought to determine the octane rating and will adjust itself to use more of the 91 than the 96, so its more economical to use the 96 (which costs more per litre btw). Your comments please! 3. Bonus question! The automatic transmission I know is a bit dodgy in the 9000 series as a relative weak point. I've never owned an automatic before and wonder if you guys could give me some tips on the best driving style to look after it. eg I've taken to switching to N while waiting at lights, does this make a real difference, or am I just dreaming? cheers!
