All the while you can get R12 I'd stay with it, as it is colder (more efficient?) than R134 from what I've heard. If your service place still has R12 I'd go with it - at least you'll get another few years out of the AC system without having to convert. R12 is outlawed (here in the UK, at least), but it is still legal to recharge vehicles with the existing stocks.
