Well, IYHO, as they say.
I like my NG, it's a great car that meets today's standards for
comfort, luxury, handling, and performance. While it may come "off
the shelf" with a little less in the handling department, it more
than makes up for it in other areas. Handling is easily matched to
older Saab with some minor mods, or more serious mods for those who
like a go kart feeling.
When buying a '97 NG, watch for a few things. They are generally
reliable but if there is a problem, it will most likely be in one of
the following areas: The clutch cable can be a problem. Some drivers
have worn out their clutch at 50-60K, I don't know if it't the drivers
style or a mechanical issue. Also, check for any oil leaks below the
tranny/bellhousing area. A few main seals seep, some drive seals seep.
Look for headgasket leaks too, a few problems have been reported.
Test drive for any vibration. A few alternators have had bearings
go bad (whine) and there's a TSB out on the A/C evap valve - which
seems to commonly go.
Around 50K an NG should get new idler pulleys and a serp belt. Parts
cost is about $100, an hour of labor. Some have been known to go so
smart owners replace them. If I were you, I'd subscribe to
alldatadiy.com, get a list of the TSB's and check them all out
before you buy.
