I haven't checked it out, but there are probably many places where a liquid lubricant are needed on the Space Shuttles, things like gearboxes for the rudder and opening the cargo bay doors, etc. Anywhere metal moves against metal. And the Shuttles (or any space application) can benefit from the stability of synthetic lubes in vacuum and at /very/ extreme temperatures. So that's why there are a bunch of places that they use Mobil1 lubricants. How about the wheel bearings on the landing gear? (Some heavy trucks are using oil in their wheel bearings instead of grease, look for the ones with a little plastic window on the 'grease cap' to check the oil level, and a drain plug on the side of the hub for servicing.) If you have a gear reduction box attached to a motor, the gears have to be lubricated somehow, whether by a liquid oil bath or a grease bath. Mobil makes synthetic greases, ATF, gear oils, hydraulic fluids, and other lubricants also. And NASA is well aware of it. --<< Bruce >>-- -- Bruce L. Bergman Return to Main Index
