Todd, it is tough to say. Is your turbo gage white - yellow - orange? If so and your car is producing boost above the yellow/orange border, your APC system has been tweaked. Try running premium fuel and see if it is any better. If this is the case, you are probably experiencing pinging and the APC system is trying its best to develop as much power as possible without destroying the engine. I would see if you can tune the APC controller down or replace it with another used one that has not been tweaked. if your boost gage is white - orange - red and you are experiencing this phenomenon in the middle of the orange range, you are probably still pinging, but you need to decarbon the engine, run premium fuel, and assure that the timing is set correctly. Also make sure that the fuel pump is delivering adequate fuel pressure. I do not see that oil would help. It could be the turbo, but it is more likely that there is another culprit. probably good idea to invest in a couple diagnostic tools. I am betting that a tank of premium will help things out a bit. good luck, KeithG "todd" <doehrintnopsamri.ccf.org> wrote in message news:9rk9qh$6sfnopsam.ccf.org... > hi, > i just got a 1984 saab 900 turbo with about 150k miles. it runs very well, > no missing, very clean engine and exhaust. > > the only issue is that when im going uphill on highways, as the turbo moves > into about the middle of the orange band, it suddenly stutters, the needle > bounces down a little (like 1/4") and then it immediately grabs again. this > produces a "slipping effect". the engine rpm's do NOT visibly change though. > > this problem is not really noticable under hard accelleration such as in the > city. > > i have recently replaced the oil with penzoil 10w30 "turbo" oil. it still > does it, but not *quite* as much. > > my question is, given a currently very limited budget, are these signs that > the turbo is going to poop out soon !!?? > > i have to drive round trip from cleveland new york next weekend and i cant > afford to take it to the shop until nov. 15 (payday). > > any thoughts or suggestions would be extremely helpful. > thanks, > todd > >
