If your car is post 1993, you will need the cat fitted to reach the level of emisions for the MOT test, in this case it would be wise to keep your cat intact, and buy a cat replacement pipe, so you coud refit the cat when taking the car for test (and of course you would have to leave it fitted when driving on a public road, saving the cat replacement pipe for 'track days') ;-)
