Subject: Re: 1989 900S

i had an 89 900S automatic that really died at about 120,000 miles. it might have been less but the odometer quit around 88,000. i'm not a mechanic but i think i know what kiiled it. bear with me here. i guess the oil pump is held in place by one small tooth like projection. well mine broke off and the oil pump as well as the broke little piece traveled around in the engine and pretty much destroyed the engine from the inside out. add to that the fact that the engine had not oil after the oil pump broke off-well you get the picture. this car was maintained according to schedule-it was my baby. my mechanics (one has worked on saabs for his entire 30 year career) said they had seen this kind of failure in a few other automatics and that it was a freak accident. i was driving at the time it happened and no alarms went on-not even the check engine light. i noticed only when i looked in my mirror and saw a lot of white smoke. i had quite a few things go wrong with that car. some were just general maintenance things but fairly expensive (no i don't work on my car. i work on people). the heat shield between the electrical wiring and the exhaust system crumbled and needed to be replaced. the heat shield wasn't too expensive the but the labor in doing it was horrific. they had to go in through the floor of the car rather than below. the membrane between the two parts of the drive shaft ruptured (that happened when i was driving too-maybe it's me. that one had the check engine light and it sounded radically different. i just drove right to my mechanic's garage). had various oil leaks that cost 10 in labor what the little part cost. god i loved that car!!! =)
