A compressor is driven directly from the crankshaft. "Supercharged" normally means that a compressor is fitted. A compressor will work more immediately than a turbo, but it does not have the efficiency benefits from using the energy in the exhaust gasses. Also, a compressor can sometimes be noisy. There have been comments in the motoring press over the lack of refinement of the compressor used in some mercedes engines. Johannes
