Unfortunately, this is inherited from back in the old days (70's and before) when gas could be had for .29 cents/gallon. Bigger was always more expensive, more prestige, more ego. I recall in the 70's when a few of us started driving Japanese cars and the assumption was that "it's small, so it must be cheap". Driving a Japanese car was to invite abuse, but a European car would really peg you as a freak :-) We just about had this mentality licked, then someone noticed that the cowboys with trucks (these cowboys don't work at a ranch) liked 4-wheel drive. A few of them were buying Jeeps... it just got worse from there. Since no one really considered SUV's as cars, they managed to escape from gas mileage regulations for years, and are only now being pegged for the waste that they are. But, I digress... Bob
