I had this work done, at significant expense. The belt is $40 from a dealer. The pulleys are about $35 each, AFAIR, there are 2. Labor should be about .5 hours. >I have owned quite a number of different cars. I don't remember ever >having this kind of problem with them. Is there something peculiar >about the design of Saabs that requires this belt to be replaced every >50,000 miles? The apparent reason that the pulley wears out is that a lot of heat is generated, it has plastic components, and they break down. It is definitely bad design. The belt last about as long as most belts last. Lots of folks think rubber belts last forever and never replace them until forced to do so. That's bad, but it makes it seem like belts last longer. Most need replacement by 50K miles or 4 years. Also, many other cars require a timing belt replacement at 60K or so... when a mechanic does the timing belt they most always remove the accessory belt, notice the wear, and replace it at the same time. So, it gets replaced "unnoticed". Bob
