I hate to say this but if it has to be diesel I would go for the Passat. The reason... The head gasket went on my 9-5 estate over christmas and I ended up renting a Seat whatever tdi (Same engine as Passat) and borrowing a 9-3 2.2 tdi back to back. There is no contest the VW diesel is refined and pulls quite high into the rev range, (it actually behaves quite like my 9-5 2.0 lpt - nice torque from low down but will still pull at 4000 RPM). The Saab - yeuch. It reminded me of an old Pug 405 diesel I used to drive, ie when you get to 2500 RPM change up as theres nothing left. Hopefully Saab will improve their diesels soon (they've got to do something to reduce the company car tax) but until they do, the VW engine is about the best I've seen. Unless of course you also include the 130 bhp variant from the Golf GT tdi..... Hope this helps, Iain
