Subject: Re: 9-5 brakes & rotors at 20K miles!!!

I just don't understand some of the comments made in this thread. I'm not satisfied with the braking performance of my 1996 Saab 900SE, which I bought about a year ago. The brake pedal goes too far down before the brakes start to catch, and even when they do there doesn't seem to be enough friction. It's almost as if the brake pads are glazed in some way. After the car's last service, the Saab dealer's mechanic told me that, although the pads were not original equipment, there appeared to be nothing wrong. He said that the brakes were bled as part of the regular service -- so that's not the problem. A Midas mechanic told me that, although he could put new pads on, there was no guarantee that the braking performance would be any better. My other car, a 1990 Mazda MX-5 Miata, has MUCH more responsive brakes. I've owned the Miata for three and a half years, and have done absolutely nothing to the brakes. There is no sign of any wear, to judge from the performance of the brakes. I drive the Miata much more than I drive the Saab. Is it possible that there is a Saab design flaw here? If so, can anything be done to fix it? I'd really like it if the brakes on my Saab were as good as those on the Miata.
