Subject: Re: NG 900 2.0 engine idler pulley question

I actually had mine fall off (95 900 SET) while driving. Here's what happened: Winter in New Hampster, heading out to go snowshoeing from Boston. As I was rolling up to a stoplight, I heard a thud from engine compartment that I hoped was snow falling out of the fender wells. When the car started smoking and smelling of burnt rubber 30 seconds later, I pulled over. Turned out that the idler pulley had frozen, ripped off, and the serp belt was looped over the pulley mount, still turning but not happily. Undriveable, of course. AAA towed to dealer in Boston, fixed for a couple hundred $ (can look up exact cost if you need it). What a PITA. I had the dealer replace my 97's under warranty ("I think I hear it squeaking and don't want to get stranded," wink wink. They were happy to do so. -Micah > From: Bob <uctraingNOSPAMnopsamanet.com> > Organization: don't look here > Newsgroups: alt.autos.saab > Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 14:04:23 GMT > Subject: Re: NG 900 2.0 engine idler pulley question > > On Thu, 24 Jan 2002 03:42:29 GMT, "Doney" > <remove2reachdavedoneynopsamm.com> wrote: > > >> >> My question to you all is how many have had the small and / or large idler >> pulley actual fail on there NG 900's? > > I haven't seen one, 'cause I heard about the problem and had mine > replaced early :-) ... but from what I've seen surmised, the > little pulley spins way too fast and burns out the bearing, then > the plastic parts melt, and you know the story from there.
