There is however an other good reason to use winter tyres. Both of you seem to relate snow tyres to actual snow. Apart from the different threads on winter tyres, the main difference is actually the rubber mixture used. The compound used for winter tyres is much more suited for lower temperatures. As a rule of thumb: if average day temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius wintertyres will have much more grip than summer tyres. This difference will increase with increased tyre speed rating. All season tyres are a compromise between the two. So it is neither an excellent summer, nor a perfect wintertyre. mvg, Mark Gerritsma
