Subject: Re: 9000 intermittent rough idle/stalling

Danny, I'm so glad you've asked this question just now, as I'm having similar symptoms ('92 9000 CS 2.3 16i, 108k miles). Similarities / differences are: 1. My tickover is only slightly erratic - nothing like as drastic as you describe. However, I have had a couple of isolated extreme tickover problems in the past - first very high tickover about 2 years ago, then very low about 1 year ago. 2. Mine cuts out momentarily under gentle acceleration and at any speed exactly as you describe. Reading the responses to this post, I've more or less come to the conclusion that there's more than one problem. First: The rubber nipple and vacuum vent on top of the valve cover, as suggested by Ken Washington. Like Ken, I have also had the smell of burned oil being sucked into the cabin and my engine also runs a little rough and noisy. Second: Sticky "adaptive idle control valve" as suggested by Ramsey Frist. Third: The DI, as suggested by Johannes Andersen. Ken's and Ramsey's solutions sound pretty inexpensive, so I think I'll try these before replacing my DI.. I should find some time this week and will post again when there's something to report.. Thanks guys for your posts. Oh yes: Can anyone advise how to access the idle control valve? I have the Haynes manual, but find it almost completely useless. I have several examples of good Haynes manuals from the past (Ford Escort MkI, Triumph 2000/2500, Yamaha RD400, Velocette Singles, Vauxhall Astra), but the recent ones are just rubbish in comparison - in particular no exploded/schematic diagrams to give you an overview of the systems.
