Subject: Re: Quality of Saab vs competition

I own a 1999 9-3 and before that I had a 1986 900 turbo. My parents also owned an ’86 900t, a Volvo 240, and a Volvo 740. The jury is still out on my 9-3, but I can honestly say I was very happy with my 900 after 210k miles. In fact, I sold it to another friend who is still driving it. The car was a Pennsylvania car for it's whole life and has endured rock salt, sub-zero temperatures, and frequent hunting trips into the woods that might be best described as off-roading. It never left me stranded. And, except for when the turbo went on it, I can't really remember a time when it was "broken down". I changed the oil religiously and attended to its occasional knocks and squeaks. I think a quality car is a car that can age gracefully. Unlike some cars, I don’t think Saabs are likely to simply fall apart some random morning. Even though I had covers over my leather seats, if the car was cleaned up, it was still a good looking car. In terms of raw mechanics and quality of design, I’d put the Saabs up there with the more mainstream BMW and Volvo. Like I said, I’m still getting a feel for my 9-3. I just bought it a couple months ago and I’ve already had to bring it into the shop under warrantee. I suspect it may have been a result of something the previous owner did or ran over for that matter. Sections of the rack and control arms are making a knocking sound.
