Hello Simon, As far as the idle goes on your 2.0 na you only have two vacuum hoses. 1 to your fuel regulator and 1 to the carbon canister inside the RH. fender.Plug both of them to see if that helps, the car will idle with both plugged. On my 89 9000 I the vacuum/ electric valve on the carbon canister lost its ground from the computer when the car warmed up, the valve would start to tick, (kick in and out) which caused a vacuum leak to the gas tank. I cut the wire and ran it to ground after may hours trying to find out where the computer get a ground from on that lead. It worked. As far as the check engine light, did you check your oil level.
