I think a lot of car mfr's are looking at the military to make their cars uber-cool. This idea BMW has is probably their attempt at HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick). Idea being you never take your hands off controls because there are controls on the stick and throttle controller. You'd be amazed how good one can get hammering through radar modes while acquiring a target and tracking it while never taking your hands off the stick. Unfortunately a car is not a jet aircraft so the averages user isn't going to adapt and utilize quirky features. With that being said, I can't understand why more car companies aren't putting controls on the steering wheel. I have a 99 Pontiac and absolutely love steering wheel controls. Not hard at all to adapt to. Plus with a HUD, you really never have to look down.
