This is part of your problem! With ABS brakes you should never release the pedal. The whole point of the ABS system is that it's varying the braking power for you, to prevent sliding. You will know if the ABS is working because the pedal will start vibrating sharply under your foot. Don't panic, it just means things are working as they should be and KEEP THE PEDAL FIRMLY PRESSED.
