It can be removed, but you need equipment for working with surface mounted integrated circuits and know how to use it. > I suppose I need the Saab diagnostic tool or something > like that. It can be done using a PC with the correct software and the correct interface. A Saab dealer can upodate the software using two methods. One is to remove the ECU and connect it to a PC. The other is to connect the Tech II diagnostivs tool to the diagnostics port and the Tech II will then download information about the ECU. The Tech II is then connected to the PC and the correct software is now down- loaded to Tech II. The Tech II is then connected to the diagnostics port again and the ECU is upgraded. Before the tuners here in Sweden found out how to use the diagnostics port they removed the Flash memory from the circuit board and replaced it with a chip holder. Now they just attach a laptop and download the modified software. One problem is that the next visit to the Saab dealer may result in a new software download and all changes are lost. :-( This can be prevented if the tuner changes the identity of the software so it gets protected the same way as Saab protects a 2.0 150hp from being upgraded to a 2.0 190 hp just by a new software download. ...or 2.3 170hp to an Aero. > So, I think I will go and see Rica in Holland and > ask them to do the job. And too bad for the US$ 700... This is just about what you have to pay here in Sweden for a software only upgrade, 150hp -> ~210hp or 170/185hp -> ~230hp. There is an not so often mentioned option that may be cheaper for the 2.3L engine. Swap the ECU with the ECU from the Aero of the same model year. The turbo unit is different, but from what I have heard it works rather well. -- G–ran Larsson hoh AT approve DOT se
