If you look at the non-Aero engine from below you will see that the gearbox is attached to the engine block with bolts in a half cicrle around the flywheel. The lower part of the flywheel housing is not attached to anything. The oil pan is just a shallow tray bolted to the engine block. If you look at the Aero engine from below you will see that the oil pan is different. Instead of a shallow tray only it also extends towards the flywheel housing and attaches to the gearbox using bolts. The oil pan is also more rigid with strengthening on the inside. The Saab documentation indicates that the Aero oil pan reduces noise, but it will probably also strengthen the way the gearbox attaches to the engine. The noise level was reduced a little, but in the end I don't think it was woth the cost. The oil pan is not something that is changed in five minutes, the engine frame does not give enough access... > Upgraded gearbox; what is the difference from a standard one (I have a '00)? Saab changed some components inside the gearbox for the Aero and the Viggen. When the Aero was introduced in 2000 all gearboxes was of the new type. Upgrade kits are available for 1999 and earlier. > I think I will follow your excample with replacing coils, dampers, and anti > sway bars. Huge difference. Note that you can get the parts as a kit (sportchassi) at about half the price of the individual parts. Fitting the parts is not a five minute stunt and all wheel angles have to be adjusted when done... -- G–ran Larsson hoh AT approve DOT se
