Subject: Re: New 9-3 model??

For better or for worse, Saab have long since announced that there will be NO hatchback version of the new 9-3. The sallon and wagon will be the primary variants, followed later by a coupe and cabriolet. The only throwback in the hatchback direction is the idea of a crossover utility vehicle based loosely on the premise of the 9-3X concept car - but this hasn't yet been confirmed. My dealer wants my fathers 9000 Aero hatchback as they can't get enough of them, as indeed many Saab die-hards want hatchbacks. I agree with all of the above postings - it is sad to see the hatch die, and yes it is far more practical, and yes they seem to be mad to ignore the market in the UK where the vast majority of 9-3's are hatches. Likewise it is indeed sensible to try and follow market trends and compete more directly with A4's and 3-series which after all have only saloon and estate derivatives, but it is a shame not to try and find some middle ground - after all Saab have been kept alive by being different! On the engine discussion, according to "Car" magazine in the UK the engine line up from launch will be as follows:- 150bhp 2.0lpt 218bhp 2.0T And the swiftest will have the 9-5 Aero's 250bhp 2.3T. Alledgedly the new chassis can handle far more power than the current one, and the engine bay is also designed to take the 3.0V6 diesel..... Then again, the only thing that all publications and Saabers can agree on is..... we shall have to wait and see...........
